Most people know that exercise keeps our energy levels high, our heart healthy, and does wonders for our waistlines. These are just a few of the benefits that come from working out. However, some of these benefits cannot be seen. You need to have a keen eye to spot some of these hidden benefits. Hopefully you were able to see some of the hints I was dropping for you. Another benefit of exercise that is often overlooked is vision.
So, how does exercise improve our vision? Working out actually improves vision in a few ways. Did you know that most eye problems are linked to other health problems? Diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, and high blood pressure are a few heath issues that can cause problems for your eyes. Exercise helps prevent all of these health problems, so consequently exercise helps your vision as well.
Exercise can also lower your intraocular pressure. This is done by improving the blood flow to the retina and optic nerve. Why is this important? The amount of ocular pressure in your eyes is directly correlated to the development of glaucoma. If you can lower the level of pressure in your eyes, you greatly reduce the risk of glaucoma.
Another fun fact: People who exercise three times per week or more are less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration.
With all of the incredible benefits of exercise, it amazes me how many people still can’t be bothered to take a little time out of there day for some physical activity. Vision is extremely important and unfortunately one of the benefits that slips under the radar. Don’t let the many benefits of exercise go to waste. Keep an eye on the big picture. In order to increase your chances of a long and healthy life, exercise needs to be a big part of it.
