What Do Yoga Mats and Rubber Soles Have In Common?

Not sure if you guys have been reading the news lately but recently there was a whistle blower that alerted everyone about the questionable ingredient in subway’s bread. Azodicarbonamide, better known as “the yoga mat chemical” was quickly expelled from the ingredients that subway used to make their bread.

Azodicarbonamide is a compound that was specifically used to create a consistent texture in subway’s bread. Was subway risking taste over health? They definitely seemed like they were, and is quite shocking that a fast food chain that promotes healthy eating would do such a thing. Yet, I guess it can’t be too surprising by a company that is very stingy with their meat. Doing their best to save a buck where they can.

Without a blink of an eye subway was ready to drop that ingredient. Obviously that ingredient was not holding the subway franchise together or else it would crumble like its non-chemically injected bread! But hey, why only bash subway since they are not alone. McDonald’s, Wendy’s and a couple other companies use this same chemical that can also be found in the rubber of your shoes. It’s quite scary since I have eaten at all of these restaurants not knowing how much of that chemical I have consumed.

At the same time, what these restaurants have been doing is totally legal by the approval of the food and drug administration. America is one of the few developed countries that have approved this chemical to be used in and around food. Why? Well, because there are no studies of long term effects on the human body. The world health organization recommends very minimal intake of azodicarbonmide, in other words don’t consume this stuff! Sometimes I wonder if our FDA will ever get it right, at least once. Only time will tell…..
