Cold Weather = Achy Knees

Do you ever feel like you can predict the weather by the achiness of your knees? Have you ever been able to determine a cold day or an upcoming rain storm by the number of times your knees cracked and popped while walking down your stairs in the morning? Believe it or not, this is extremely common. As we continue to move into Fall and Winter, your knees may begin to progressively ache more and more. There is a reason for this phenomenon.

The reason is most likely you are experiencing early signs of arthritis, also called osteoarthritis. Arthritis is inflammation of a joint or joints. Arthritis more frequently affects people as they age, but it’s not uncommon for people with over-active lifestyles to experience these aches and pains as well.

The good news is there are a number of things you can do for this frustrating disease. Just to name a few:

Warm up your body on those cold and rainy days

If you are feeling stiff in the morning, it’s a good idea to take a warm shower or bath. This will help your joints more readily prepare for the stress of your daily movements.

Take glucosamine and fish oil

These supplements are great for lubricating your achy joints. Just like a car, a well lubricated part is a well functioning part.

Stay active

Ever wake up in the morning with your knees completely stiff and sore, but as you continued activity throughout the day, they started feeling better? As stated before, arthritis is inflammation of the joint or joints. As you progressively move or exercise during the day, that inflammation breaks up, causing relief in that area.

Move somewhere warm

Now, this may not be an option for most, but it will effectively end the pain for most people. Cold and rainy days tend to bring out the worst of arthritis. If you are still having pain even on the nicest days, it’s time to visit your doctor.

While your achy joints can save you money on purchasing a barometric pressure sensor, it can be a major nuisance. Take care of your joints and they will take care of you.
